1. Elements describing the information resource:

TitlelName (Mxndatory; Repeatable)

This is the primary label of the information resource described by the record; for example, the official name of an
organisation, a person, a service, or a document. '

The Title/Name element should be as descriptive as possible as it is intended for initial presentation to user and
may be used to determine the relevance of the information resource to the user's needs.

This element is repeatable, m order that the Tiflel Name can be provided languages other than the ongmal language
of the locator record or mformatlon resource:

Type of information resource (Mandatory)

This element indicates the type of information resource described by the locator record. For example, an
information resource could be a bibliográphy, map, chart, dataset, project, computer program, service,
organisation, or person, among other things.'

Abstract (Optional, Repeatable)

A description of the information resource which provides enough information to enable the user to determine if the
information resource is relevant.

The Abstract can be used to supply descriptive information about the information resource not covered by other
elements.

The Abstract Is repeatable in order tlzat abstracts can be supplied in languages other than the origial language of
the locator record or information resource

The Abstract is not mandatory but it is strongly recommended that abstracts are supplied for the benefit of the end
user.

Author/Originator (Optional, Repeatable)

This element identifes the organisation/person responsible for the intellectual content of the information resource

The content of the element can be plain text or structured into the following sub-elements:

Name
Organisation
Street address
City
State or province
Zip or postal code
Country
Network address
Telephone
Fax

The name of the organisation is mandatory and at least one address type (network address, telephone/fax, postal
address) should be supplied. The inclusion of the country name is highly recommended as it is not always obvious
from email and telephone information.

NOTE: Contact information for records describing persons or organisations should NOT be given in this element,
but in the Distributor element.

**GILS ELEMENT: Originator. This element may be left unstructured, or it may be structured into any of
the sub-elements weIIKnown; name; organisation; street-address; city; state-or-province; zip-or-postal-
code; country; network-address; telephone; fax.
**DUBLIN CORE ELEMENTS: Author or Creator - and - Contributors

Date of creation or last update of the information resource (Mandatory, if applicable)

The date on which the information resource (not the record) became available or was last updated. This element
does not apply to information resources such as databases that are continuously updated, or records that are created
to describe organisations, services or people.

Controlled vocabulary (Mandatory if applicable, Repeatable)

This element and its sub-elements provide the title of a thesaurus òr other controlled vocabulary list and the terms
drawn from that list used to describe the subject matter covered by the information resource.

Uncontrolled vocabulary (Optional, Repeatable)

Terms used to describe the subject matter covered by the information resource which are not drawn from a
thesaurus or controlled vocabulary list.

Spatial Coverage (Optional)

This element and its sub-elements provide information about the spatial coverage of the information resource. It
includes either a repeatable sub-element for place names drawn from a recognised place-names list and/or the
bounding co-ordinates for the covezed area (west, east, north and south coordinates)

Temporal Coverage (Optional)

This element and its sub-elements provide information about the temporal coverage of the information resource. It
includes either a structured representation with start and end time or unstructured text.

Language of resource (Mandatory, Repeatable)

Provides the name(s) of the language(s) in which the information resource (not the record) is available and the
respective ISO 639 standardised code(s).

Related resources (Optional, Repeatable)

This element and its sub-elements provide references to records describing related resources, either on the same
GELOS server, another GELOS server, or any other compatible locator server.
